The Day I Almost Lost My Life
Octavia Bailey
Everything in my life was going perfect, until I turned four years of age and then I started having problems with my respiratory system. I was getting a lot of colds when the weather changed among other things. Even if the weather changed for one day I got sick. Soon after I kept getting sick my Mom started to wonder is this normal? So she took me to the doctor and then that’s when it all happened, I was diagnosed with asthma.

One day when walking home from the bus stop when I was six years old, I was having trouble breathing. When I got to my townhouse I knocked on the door and no one answered right away like usual and then, I fell out. After I fell out my grandmother came to the door and I remember her calling my name “Tavie, Tavie get up” and I looked up at her and then she realized I was wheezing so she picked me up and carried me into the house upstairs to my room. After she laid me down she hooked up my nebulizer and gave it to me. About ten minutes later, after the breathing treatment was done she realized I was still wheezing. After she realized I was still wheezing she paged my mother “911”.

About fifteen minutes later, my mother called in response to the page and rushed home. When my mother got home she took me to the emergency room and they took me right in. Once we got into the room and my mother told them what happened they hooked me up to about four IV’s and said that I needed to be transported to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Once I got there they hooked me up to an oxygen tube and diagnosed me with pneumonia, which is what triggered the asthma attack. As hours went by I was still in critical condition, so they asked my mother could they put a breathing tube down in my throat she said, “ no, you can’t, we’ll let God handle this”. After that I ended up in the Intensive Care Unit for four days with no solid food, just broth and Jell-O. A few days later I was able to gos that you have. Also that experience taught me to never take anything for granted especially your life because you can be here today and gone tomorrow. You should live life day by day and not in the future. Don’t hold back from anything and don’t let anyone hold you back because you may not have another chance.
